Fairytale Retellings I’ve Read and Want To Read | Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Fairytale Retellings I Have Read & Want To Read!

Hello bookworms and welcome back to Josie’s Book Corner! It’s Tuesday, and that only means one thing here on my blog… Top Ten Tuesday! This is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely blog The Broke and the Bookish, so please click their name to go to their blog to see more info on this awesome meme that they host.
This week’s topic is Top Ten Fairytale Retellings We Have Read/Want To Read. I love fairytale retellings but sadly, I have not read many. I have only read 2 fairytale retellings but there are a TON of books I want to read, so I will show you both the books I’ve read and the ones I want to read!

Let’s Go!

Fairytale Retellings I’ve Read

1. Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

DID ANYONE ELSE KNOW THIS WAS A FAIRYTALE RETELLING OF CINDERELLA?! I didn’t know until I saw it in someone else’s Top Ten Tuesday, but the more I think about it, the more I see that this really has some similarities!

I would say that it’s not an actual retelling, but more like a book that was inspired by Cinderella, with a few elements of the overall fairytale story, if you think about it a little harder.

But needless to say, this is probably and most possibly my favourite fantasy series of this year, hands down. Nothing has come close to this so far! Sarah J Maas is queen.

And just in case you’re interested… click here to see my review of Throne of Glass!

And click here to go to the Goodreads page where you can add this to your Goodreads TBR if you have not read this amazing series and would like to!

2. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

Another fairytale retelling by the AMAZING Sarah J Maas. Honestly, Maas writes some great quality re-tellings that are definitely original

If you don’t know already – and if you don’t know, then where the heck have you been over the past couple of months?! – this is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. And it’s the best I’ve read! (Well, the fact that it’s the ONLY one that I’ve read makes it hard for me to say this).

But if you’re looking for a great Beauty and the Beast retelling, this is one you need to check out. Plus, it incorporated fae into it! So if you’re a fan of fae, then here’s another book you need to check out!

If you’re interested, I have a review of this book, so click here to see that if you need any more convincing to read this one heck of a great book.

Fairytale Retellings I Want To Read:

3. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

You guys have no idea how badly I want to read this book and the rest in the series, which are also featured in this list!

Cinder is a fairytale retelling of Cinderella but with a twist . . . Cinder is a cyborg! It’s set in New Beijing in which androids and cyborgs exist. If that doesn’t intrigue you, I don’t know what will!

If you’d like to know more about the book or add it to your Goodreads list, click here!

This is the second book in the Lunar Chronicles series and this time, it’s a fairytale retelling of Red Riding Hood! How freaking cool is that?!

Unlike Cinder, this book is set in France, which is so so cool. Not just because France is one of the places I dream of visiting someday, it’s just really cool how this series alternates between different settings!

Cress is a fairytale retelling of Rapunzel which was one of my favourite fairytales as a child – well, one of my most memorable ones!

Click here to go to the Goodreads page to add it to your TBR!

Winter is the final installment in the series and is a retelling of Snow White. This one is probably the one I am most looking forward to, because I remember re-watching Snow White so many times when I was a child. I LOVE the story!

4. The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

This book has been getting so much hype all over the book community lately! It is a re-telling of A Thousand and One Nights which I personally have never heard of and have no idea how the story goes, but it’s a retelling I want to read so badly, and will be reading this month! Yay!

Click here if you’d like to check out the Goodreads page!

5. Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

This is a retelling of The Beauty and the Beast fairytale. I find that it is a very popular fairytale that is being retold. I have been seeing so many Top Ten Tuesday posts featuring many Beauty and the Best retellings.

But despite that, this book sounds very interesting!

6. Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

Now this is a retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Another fairytale type story that was a big part of my childhood. This book takes a big twist on the story.

In Dorothy Must Die, Dorothy found a way to get back to Oz and took over, becoming the evil one, turning Oz into a crazy place. The main character has a mission – to kill Dorothy.

7. Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge

I just love this cover so much! The green, and the splash of red… ah it’s beautiful! Anyway, back to the topic. This is a story inspired by Little Red Riding Hood.

It’s got magic, darkness and evil, what I get from it is a feel of a story of good vs. evil with a potentially great romance. I’m excited for this one!

8. Mechanica by Betsy Cornwell

Oh my lord, another beautiful cover! I cannot resist! This is a retelling of Cinderella with a protagonist who is good with mechanics. She’s an inventor forced to be a servant in her home. You guys know the Cinderella story.

From the blurb, it says this book contains themes of social injustice and family, and that makes the story even more intriguing, so I will definitely be reading this when I can!

9. A Whole New World by Liz Braswell

Now THIS one is definitely the fresh one out of this entire bunch of books I’ve listed! Maybe you can guess from the title, but this is a retelling of Aladdin with a twist. (Oh how I love twists!) What if Jafar was the first one to summon the Genie?

DOESN’T THAT SOUND ABSOLUTELY CRAZY INTERSTING?! I don’t know about you, but I’m so intrigued by this. Aladdin was one of my favourite fairytales by Disney. To see this twist on the story has me hooked already!

10. The Child Theif by Brom

I discovered this on Aimal’s blog post for the Top Ten Tuesday topic this week and oh my goodness I rushed to put it on my TBR!

This is a retelling of Peter Pan, in which Peter Pan is not the friendly, harmless boy who will lead you to Neverland. It’s got magic and faeries, a combination that gets an automatic approval from me. This is very high on my to read list.

Click here to go to the Goodreads page!

That is all for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday! I hope you enjoyed seeing all the fairytale retelling books I have and want to read and I hope I’ve given you some new books to add to your TBR!

What is your favourite fairytale retelling book that you’ve read?

What fairytale retelling book to do REALLY want to read?

  1. The Lunar Chronicles are absolutely amazing, I can’t wait for you to read the series! 😀 I have a feeling you’ll enjoy them just as much as I did, or even more. Cruel Beauty is also a very interesting book that has me interested in reading more of the author’s works (like Crimson Bound). I can’t wait to read Dorothy Must Die and Mechanica, as well as The Child Thief, and I’m super excited for the release of A Whole New World! Great list, Josie! ❤

    • I know right? Looking through the Goodreads list of fairytale retellings I was so shocked at how many there were!
Thank you for stopping by! You’re lucky to have won a copy of Cinder, I hear it is amazing! I cant wait to hear your thoughts!

      • The girl I won it off, said she didn’t enjoy or finish it. But I have seen reviews that say it starts off slow and then gets really good, so I’m hopeful. I will review once I have read it.

      • Oh no, that’s a shame! Well, I suppose it’s all up to our personal tastes, right? Hopefully you’ll be able to stick around through the slow part to get to the good part. I hope you enjoy it! And I look forward to seeing that review!
        xoxo 😀

      Yep, definitely. I love SJM!
I only heard of it a little while ago and also while reading other people’s TTT! Cinderella is such a lovely fairytale.

  3. You’ve literally included every book I’ve read and want to read!
I’m not excited with The Wrath and the Dawn because I didn’t like the original tale, but people said it was good:)
Hope you have a great weekend:)

  4. The Child Thief sounds terrifyingly good, so I definitely need to check it out soon. A Whole New World is another one that sounds amazing and that I’m excited to read about, especially since I haven’t really heard of any other Aladdin retellings.

    • Yes, it does doesn’t it?! I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
I haven’t read any Aladdin retellings either which I really want to change! 😄 hopefully we both get around to it soon. xoxo

  6. What a great list! 😀 I’ve just added a whole load of them to my own to-read list~ 🙂 I’ve been super-into fairytale retellings recently, so here’s a few more that you might like:

Thorn by Intisar Khanani is an amazing retelling of the Brothers Grimm’s The Goose Girl, as is (naturally) The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman is a mash-up of both Sleeping Beauty & Snow White, and has the added bonus of some beautiful illustrations by Chris Riddell. And lastly, Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levigne is a hilarious take on Cinderella.

  7. I like how The Lunar Chronicles was just one spot on your list. I kept mine that way too, I felt like a series was just one spot. (I really only mentioned the first book in the series.) Dorothy Must Die made my list too. I wanted to include Crimson Bound, but I couldn’t remember the title! Just saw the cover picture in my mind. 🙂 Great list!

    • Yeah, I just really felt the need of including all four books as one. Because they need to be mentioned! Since they were all based in different fairytales, I wanted to write a bit about all of them.
Glad Dorothy Must Die made your list too!! And I hate when you can only remember the cover of a book, its so frustrating! 😄 xoxo

  8. Yaaaaas, I’m glad you put the Child Thief on your list for two reasons: 1) because it’ll be awesome and 2) I feel influential muahaha. xD And WOW, the cover of Mechanica is freaking gorgeous. From the synopsis, I was getting Cinder-like vibes, though, but oh well.

Also, are you serious? Throne of Glass is a Cinderella retelling? D: How did I never notice? Whuuut.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Hehehe, well it’s a good pick! No matter how hard I try, I couldn’t help putting it on my list.
Yeah, Cinder and Mechanics have kind of similar vibes.
I know right?! I was like, dude what?! xoxo

  9. Great list! I really enjoyed ACOTAR, which I think is the only retelling I’ve ever read. I have to read Cinder asap. It’s getting such high praise today!

  10. Awesome book choices! 🙂
So many of these I really want to read as well, especially Cinder!
I pretty much have all of the others on my TBR and a few that I already read. 🙂

  11. Great list! I had such a hard time with this one because I haven’t read 10 fairytale retelling yet. But I’m glad the Lunar Chronicles made it to your list! You’ll enjoy them, they’re great!
