Spotlight Saturday #16 // Weekly Feature

Spotlight Saturday is a weekly feature, created by Josie at Josie’s Book Corner [aka, moi], dedicated to spotlighting and pinpointing some of the things over the week that have caught my attention more than usual, things I’ve particularly loved, etc.

Hello bookworms! It’s Saturday and obviously that can only mean one thing here on Josie’s Book Corner: Spotlight Saturday! Woot woot!
This week has been a wonderful week, within the blogosphere and within life. I almost didn’t do this post today, because I am on the verge of falling into the realm of the sleep, but as you can tell, I love you guys so much that I can’t bare to leave you hanging. It’s 2016! No slacking allowed!

I am excited for who I am spotlighting this week, because this lovely blogger is my name-twin. She runs a beautifully minimalistic, excellently-photographic blog called Word Revel. Her name is Joséphine! See? I told you we’re name-twins.

Joséphine is a wonderful blogger and this week, she has been on my mind due to her fantastic new project: Project 52 which is basically a weekly book photography challenge she hosts. I think this a fabulous way for those book bloggers or lovers looking to expand and become more frequent with other bookish communities, such as bookstagram! While I am not personally participating in it (because I’m not good at regularly taking photos, much less, taking photos every week for a certain theme is a lot of pressure), I’m sure that so many of you would love to join in!

Once again, this week has been full of wonderful blog posts, so get ready to be bombarded with awesomeness!

Kat @ Life and Other Disasters shared some trailers of movies and TV shows that we might’ve missed this week

Down the Bookhole discussed the seven qualities we love about book bad boys (and they are SO TRUE)

Aentee @ Read At Midnight announced her Diverse Young Adult Book Club (which you should all consider joining if you haven’t already)

Alex @ Fiery Reads discussed what makes a ‘favourite’ book – and I can agree with it in every way

Kaitlin @ Ink and Quills gave us writers some great brainstorming techniques

Aila @ Happy Indulgence reminded herself – and all of us bloggers – to always stay true to our hearts and ratings and not to follow the crowd (it was very encouraging and a must read for all of us book bloggers!)

Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner shared what she’d tell us if we were having coffee (or tea) with her

Brett @ Brett Michael Orr shared what publishing a book has taught him about writing

Late this week, I started reading Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin and I am blown away already. I am halfway through as of right now and I am loving it. The historical detail and the way Graudin twisted reality into her own alternate version of history is amazing. The fact that it’s set in one of my favourite time periods and centres around Hitler – who, is one of my favourite people to learn about (emphasis on learn about, because I don’t think Hitler is ANYONE’S favourite person in general).

Ah, so many lovely moments happened this week, so let me just start without all the fluff beforehand. On Wednesday, a couple of friends and I went down on a day trip. I love road trips. I love long drives and just going somewhere away from home. It’s the closest thing I can get to actually travelling out of the country. So, on Wednesday, we went down to this place about two hours away from where I live called Black Diamond. Basically, it was a gorgeous lake in the middle of nowhere, where you could swim and just relax. It was stinking hot, and I could only frolick in the shallow water (because I can’t swim), but it was fun regardless.

Today, this very Saturday, I have two highlights. The first is, I went on ANOTHER road trip! This time, I went down with three other friends to a huge botanical garden. We spent our time wandering around in the hot Australian sun, admiring the beautiful scenery, plants and flowers, while almost dying from the heat. Then, when it was getting late, before the lights of day went out, we made our way to a dam nearby, and walked along the dam wall. I have a fear of heights. It was the most terrifying experience of my life, but my friends coaxed me to look over the edge of the dam wall (which was so high up, you guys have no idea) and I almost had a panic attack, but I managed to look for a good second before freaking out and running away from the edge.

HAVE ANY OF YOU HEARD THE ACOUSTIC VERSION OF ‘OMEN’ BY SAM SMITH?! If not, you need to go and listen to it right now. It is an electronic-acoustic, featuring an electric piano and Sam Smith’s voice. It’s so groovy and I could listen to it all day long. If you have Spotify, go listen to it immediately.

If you fail, never give up because F.A.I.L means ‘first attempt in learning’.

End is not the end, in fact, E.N.D means ‘effort never dies’.

If you get no as an answer, remember N.O means ‘next opportunity’.

So let’s BE POSITIVE

I saw this on Tumblr and loved it so much. It’s an encouraging quote and definitely something to bring with you into the new year!

What are YOUR spotlights this week?

  1. That quote is so inspiring! Thanks for sharing Josie, I definitely needed it in my life 🙂 Sounds like you had a lot of fun on your road trips 😀 I’m not good with heights either, so I completely understand! We went to CN Tower a few years ago and it has a GLASS FLOOR. No thank you 😂

A glass floor? Heck no, I might have a panic attack if someone took me there! 😁

  6. I love Joséphine’s blog. I wish I was able to take beautiful bookish photos. I fail so bad, lol. Ahhhhh, I’m terrifyed of heights, too! I can’t even jump off a diving board because of the height, haha.

    1. High five for failing at photography! Maybe we can start improving our skills this year?! 🙂
Heights are the worst! I wouldn’t even be able to get onto the diving board, haha!

  7. So glad you’re enjoying Wolf by Wolf! I think I may try to read that this month or next month for sure if I don’t! Everyone seems to be loving it and I was sent an ARC, so I can’t wait to read it! I will probably end up buying the hardcover if I love it as much as everyone has been! 🙂
Your trips sound so amazing and beautiful! 😀 I love road trips so much and I really want to do more of them this year!

    1. It’s amazing, seriously! It’s really unique, and it’s gripping. The writing is beautiful and has a slight lyrical/poetic feel to it. That’s awesome that you got an ARC for it! I was lucky to get mine as a Christmas present from a friend. I’d love to get the hard cover too – trust me, you will love the book. 😀
The trip was awesome! The place we went to was gorgeous too. I even swam, and I never swim (I’m not a water person). 😀

  8. Thanks for sharing all your picks 🙂 I’m very much intrigued by Wolf by Wolf. Historical fictions are one of my favourite genres. I’ll definitely look it 🙂

  9. I used to get you and Josephine from Word Revel mixed up xD But yes that quote is amazing, really motivational. Plus, OMG road trips here in Australia can be long and huge, not having much change in scenery. Definitely a great place to road trip though, so you can bond with friends and family!

    1. Oh really? 😊 It’s an honest mistake! Hehe
And they’re such long road trips especially in Western Australia because everything basically runs north to south! But yes, it’s a lovely experience (besides the horrible heat).

      1. Haha, winter is kinda bearable, but when it gets to summer…all I wanna do is just stay indoors and crank up the AC! xD

  10. I love road trips too! I’ve never heard of Black Diamond before, what state is that in? There’s nothing like finding a gorge or water hole to take a dip in during the hot Aussie summer. I remember being in my teens and doing the same, it was nice to get away from the local pool or the beach and head somewhere different. It sounds divine! Make sure you take some happy snaps next time Josie, I’d love to see it ❤ thanks for sharing poppet.
