My Thoughts On STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (Basically a Load of Fangirling Madness) | Monday Musings

monday-musings-summary
Hello bookworms and welcome back! Monday, as you know is home to my own original feature: Monday Musings wherein I bring you non-bookish discussion posts and today I am bringing you all something a little special – it’s a movie chat! I am not calling it a review, because I am by no means an expert on movies and their technicalities. And what movie are we chatting about exactly? STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. WOOOOO!

LET’S DO THIS BECAUSE I HAVE MUCH TO FANGIRL ABOUT SAY

Ah, Star Wars. Coming in as my second favourite thing to fangirl about (Lord of the Rings is the first, of course), I absolutely adore Star Wars. I love all of the movies – yes, ALL of them. I love the concept, the world, the story, THE CHARACTERS. I’ve played video games based off the movie series. When I was younger, I imagined what it would be like if I was a Jedi, or if Jedi’s were real. I love everything about Star Wars.

So when I found out that a new Star Wars movie was coming out, I had a mini heart attack – to be honest, I had NO idea there was going to be another one, I thought it was all over. But dang, am I happy that they’re continuing to make more Star Wars movies, and this latest movie was an absolute stunner. Let me explain to you why (FANGIRLING AHEAD, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED).

Reasons Why Star Wars: The Force Awakens was flipping fabulous

THE FILM SCORE/SOUNDTRACK

From the moment the movie began, it was like a fireworks display of nostalgia, and my heart was fluttering with feels. Even though it’s been along time since the last movie, it hardly feels as though there was any time difference between them because we get a burst of some of the classic songs that we know so well from the past movies – such as the opening track, the soundtrack that accompanies ‘the force’, the music we know so well that associates with Han and Leia.

But, of course, there are an array of new soundtracks that make this movie absolutely marvellous. If you haven’t watched the movie yet, I suggest looking up the entire movie soundtrack on Spotify (I’m listening to it right now and it’s giving me so many feels. SO MANY.)

Also, the music at the very last moment in the movie almost made me cry – all that nostalgia, man!

REY: THE PROTAGONIST

First of all: YES FOR FEATURING A KICK-BUTT, INDEPENDENT FEMALE LEAD. Rey is truly an epic protagonist and it actually makes me so happy to see a girl feature as the star of the show and the one with the gifts. Sure, we had Princess Leia featuring as a pretty kick-butt female, but I just was a female jedi, because, you know… Why not? Rey is independent, she is tough as rocks, she knows exactly what she wants and she goes for it. However, the only thing I worry about in relation to her character is that, so far, she is without many faults (and flawless characters are never fun – COME ON, GIVE ME SOME FLAWS TO WORK WITH).

FEMINISM FEELS ALL AROUND!

First Rey – a strong, independent girl with a powerful gift of the Force; and then Leia – the leader of the Resistance! Dang, I could literally feel waves of feminism going on in this movie. AND I LOVED IT. See? Men aren’t always the most powerful ones, Star Wars has said so.

POSSIBLE BROMANCE?

There were some moments in the movie where I could see a blossoming of a bromance – I’m not sure, but whatever it was, it was adorable and I hope this bromance continues.

HAN SOLO AND CHEWBACCA

Yaaaaaasssss. Han Solo is of course a favourite, as is Chewbacca. For them NOT to make an appearance would be a big mistake for this movie. I was so happy to see them back again, doing what they do. And the scene between Han Solo and Leia? SO MANY FEELS. But gosh, there was also a little bit of heartbreak too, which I will not go into any further detail about because of spoilers.

THE MYSTERY

Where has Luke Skywalker disappeared to? That’s the question that hangs above your head while watching the entirety of this movie. I loved the mystery and was caught on the edge of my seat just waiting to find out. More than that, I wanted to know so badly WHY he disappeared, and if they would actually find Luke in the end.

And let me just say that the cliffhanger at the end is torturing my brain.

Some Not-So-Good Things?

So yes, it’s no secret that I loved this new Star Wars movie a whole lot, but there are some things that I wanted to point out, that kind of got on my nerves a little bit.

THE HINT OF A POSSIBLE ROMANCE?

Now, I can’t say that there is going to be a romance, or that there was any hint of a romance, but this is just was I interpreted between Rey and Finn. Every time something happened when these two interacted that almost hinted at a growing romance, I internally cringed. I don’t know what it is, but i really hope there is no future romance between the two of them! Because, I just… I just can’t.

UNDERWHELMING ANTAGONIST

This may just be because this is the movie that is laying down the foundation for future events, but Ren – the antagonist in the film – just felt a little strange. For me, I think he was a very weak villain. He’s extremely flawed, and his temper – that boy has a temper indeed! But maybe he is going to be the kind of villain who is on a path to redemption: and I really hope so because I want to see this unfold!

There is an indication to a bigger threat, Snoke, and I did enjoy how this was only hinted at, which gives anticipation for the next movie and leaves a lot of mystery to be pondered about. And the soundtrack dedicated to him is sinister as heck!

I hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of Monday Musings! It’s about time that I share my feelings about The Force Awakens, because if you have not seen it yet, PLEASE GO SEE IT NOW.

Have YOU seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens?

  1. i really loved Rey, and the bromance between Finn and Poe was super cute :D. Oh, and I shed a tear for Chewie in that unspeakable moment 😦

    1. Yay, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that bromance was cute. Oh my gosh, my heart aches for Chewy so much 😭

      1. The bromance was kind if epic

  2. I finally saw The Force Awakens on the 26th and definitely had some mixed feelings. I LOVED the soundtrack and all of the wonderful nods to the original trilogy, but I am still having a hard time reconciling the dismissal of all of the extended universe novels I grew up reading. I understand why they aren’t canon anymore, but Admiral Thrawn and the Yuuzhan Vong will always be a real part of the Star Wars epic to me.

I agree with you about Kylo Ren’s weak showing as the antagonist. He seems sinister in some scenes and like he is throwing a hissy fit in others. I hope to see a lot more character growth for him in the following movies. Thanks for the great blog post!

    1. I’ve never read the extended universe novels – did they come out before or after the movies?
Yes, Kylo Ren’s character was very strange. But I can understand why if I think about it – I’m sure there is going to be some type of challenge and moral dilemma with him in regards to which side of the force he belongs. But I wanted to see a real enemy who could get the tension rising, you know?!
Thank you for taking the time to read it! 😊

  3. I loved the Force Awakens as well!!! It was awesome to see a lead bad-ass female like Rey. I also really liked the bromance with Poe and Finn. 😛 Personally I liked the hinted romance with Finn and Rey and I fee like they’d be a pretty awesome couple. The score was amazing and I loved how the music would swell whenever someone or something from the original trilogy was shown on screen for the first time. And omg I have so many questions I need the next movie now!!!! 😀

    1. Really? You liked the hinted romance? I mean, Finns actions were cute but something about it all has me feeling a little uncomfortable.
I loved how the music did that! That emphasised the feeling of nostalgia!
Me too, there are SO many dang questions left to be answered!

      1. Haha honestly I did, I didn’t like how he lied just to get her to trust him but honestly I think they would work really well together. But again, I’m not opposed to any other ships so I’d probably be fine with whatever happens. 🙂

  4. Hmm I should probably hide lol. I watched the film (I am not a Star Wars fan and I was basically brand new to he franchise) and I liked it. I hope Rey doesn’t turn into a Mary Sue though or Finn’s girlfriend- I like their friendship better. But even though I liked the film I don’t think I really belong in the fandom hahahaha XD

    1. Oh hey, you don’t need to have watched the others to have watched this one and love it! No judgement here! (But I will suggest you to now binge read the rest because they are just as amazing).
Yep, I agree! I value their friendship more than a relationship.
Aw, fair enough! You can join Joey @ Thoughts and Afterthoughts on the other non-star wars fandom side. 😜

Loads of people have been saying to me to watch the other movies actually😅I think I should myself just to test the waters.

      2. You should! There’s nothing wrong with testing it out 😊

  5. Part of me wants to watch it because I feel like I’m on the other side of the Internet who can’t be part of conversations…but then I also don’t really care much for the franchise LOL. What a dilemma.

    1. This is how I felt with the Harry Potter stuff! Except I gave in and now I’m reading the books. 😜
It’s okay Joey, each to their own!

I’m actually so lame since I only saw the first Star Wars before watching this, but then I completely fell in love with the movie and now I’m making my way through all the older ones and MY GOSH. THIS MOVIE AND SERIES IN GENERAL IS WONDERFUL. And Rey is amazing and inspirational. I think she does have some flaws; for example, she was a hesitant to accept her responsibilities and who she was (but she worked through it and became even more awesome). I do agree, though, that we need to see her develop some more flaws! Flawed characters are good characters.

    1. Oh my gosh, really?! Wow, well there’s no proper way in doing it so just do what you gotta do! THIS SERIES IS TRULY AMAZING.
Oh you’re right about Rey, I remember that now! But yes, hopefully the next movie gives us more development! I’m so excited.

  7. Yessss I absolutely loved Rey’s character as well, I loved how she was a strong protagonist and how she had so many abilities! I think she’s flawed in that she’s too stuck on her path to be able to listen to others, but I think that’s slowly coming to fruition. Awww you didn’t like the romance? I thought it was super cute!

    1. Rey is such a great character! Oh, yes now that you mention it, I suppose that’s one flaw that she has.
I’m sorry, I didn’t! I felt really weird about the romance!

  8. I LOVE REY, but I have to agree, she’s too flawless to be real. I hope her relationship with Finn would be more like BFFs because I really enjoy their banter.
Not sure if I’m actually allowed to board this ship *looks around in fear*, but what about Rey with Ren? xD I agree that Ren is weak, but I suspect it’s because he’s not 100% committed to the dark side.
My favorite new character is BB-8 though. :p
I have suspicion about who Snoke is, and yes I think he’s the real antagonist in the new trilogy.

    1. It’s good to see I’m not the only one with this opinion! Especially about Rey and Finn. Yes I hope they turn out just good BFFS, because I do enjoy most of their interactions!
OH MT GOSH YES LET ME BOARD THAT SHIP WITH YOU! I SHIP REY AND REN SO MUCH. Yeah, that’s what I think about Ren too, I hope we see him move away from the dark side in the future movies!
      What suspicion do you have?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. YAASS, let’s set sail! I cannot think of a good ship name for them though. Hahaha. Kylo Rey looks like a typo.

I think Snoke is related to Palpatine, or maybe he’s Palpatine himself.

As I said on twitter, I loved this! I agree with everything you said except for Kylo Ren. I actually really liked him because of the exact reasons you mention. It made him human. I love those characters that has moral ambiguity. I liked his flaws because you would want a villain who is so good at everything for no reason. Plus, Ren didn’t grow up with his parents. I actually liked him next to Rey.

I also posted a review for this a few days ago! ^_^

    1. I’m glad you liked it!
Oh no I totally understand what you mean! It’s just that it made things a little underwhelming. But looking at Kylo Ren as himself, I do like his character and his flaws! I am excited to see where he goes from here and I understand now why he is flawed – because he has a balance of the light AND the dark side of the force!
And I should add that I am kind of shipping Rey and Ren together!

Unless… they’re siblings. Haha. Or cousins. Haha.

I really can’t wait for the next episode! But we have Rouge One next December so at least we have a filler before Episode 8. 😀

Oh thank goodness, it’s such a long wait, I can hardly handle it! 😊
