The Reading Habits Tag

white
Hello bookworms and welcome back! Today I am brining to you all a really fun book tag which I was tagged by Joey @ thoughts and afterthoughts and Lia @ Book Land!
We all have our own personal habits when it comes to reading and this tag reveals them! So without further delay, let’s get into my reading habits. . .

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

I have three different places where I primarily read in my house. The first being my wonderful chair that has a section that pops up so my legs can rest up on. Its potentially the most comfy chair ever, and I find myself reading there most of the time. However, if its cold in my living room, I move to my room where I usually read at my desk (weird, I know) and on my bed before I go to sleep!

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?

Random pieces of paper frustrate me! So of course, bookmarks. I have been collecting Book Depository bookmarks so now I have around 10 of them on my bedside table.

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/ a certain amount of pages?

I HAVE to stop only at the end of a chapter. I’m very obsessive about that. If I am forced to stop reading in the middle of a chapter for whatever reason, I will put my bookmark back at the beginning of the chapter. I just can’t handle picking it up again from the middle.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?

All the time. I love drinking tea when I read especially so I usually make my tea as I start reading. I also get hungry when I read, so I end up having a bowl of snacks beside me while I read also.

5. Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?

No no no. I can’t multitask when I read. I can hardly concentrate when there are full blown conversations in the background of wherever I’m reading. I need complete silence to immerse myself in the world of the book I’m reading.

6. One book at a time or several at once?

Generally I stick to one book at a time. Reading several at one time tends to detract my attention from enjoying the full extent of the novels I read and will result in disaster when it comes to review time.

7. Reading at home or everywhere?

I will read anywhere and everywhere, it doesn’t bother me. On the way to work, at work, at school, in the bus, in the train, at the shopping centre. . . everywhere.

8. Reading out lout or silently in your head?

Okay bookworms, so I’m one of the weird ones that actually reads out loud. But not the entire book of course. But I read out loud at certain moments. Sometimes I can’t help myself and I just NEED to read a sentence in the book out loud.
And I also tend to read the dialogue between characters out loud, imitating the tones they would be using as they say whatever they say. Weird? Maybe.

9. Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

Sometimes my brain likes to drift from reading one page, and before even finishing said page, move to the bottom on the next page without my consent. My brain does it randomly, and usually its hard to control. I have to force myself to concentrate! 😂

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

It breaks my heart to see books with broken spines. The only reason I break spines is if I’ve become so completely engrossed with a book that it forces me to open it wide, totally oblivious to the damage I am wreaking. My paperback of Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas sadly was a victim of this.

11. Do you write in your books?

Who the heck writes in their books?! By this I am assuming it means fictional books not notebooks.
I don’t write in my books. No way. Instead I put tabs on the pages where important or memorable moments happen that I want to remember. I have a notebook dedicated to writing down quotes and moments in books that I love.

It looks like that is the end of The Reading Habits Tag! I hope you all enjoyed reading my answers! Thank you once again to Joey and Lia.

  1. Do you happen to know if there is a guide anywhere on the internet about ‘tabbing’ books? I have seen a few people do it now, and it interests me, but I can’t seem to find anywhere that tells me what to do!

    1. There is no guide! At least, for me there isn’t. You just need to buy some post-it notes (preferably plastic ones rather than paper) and then you stick them in the pages in the position where one of your favourite quotes come up as you read! xoxo

  2. Great answers! I relate to several, particularly 5 and 6.
A notebook for quotes is a great idea, I had never thought of that!
And I really want a chair like yours….

I also love my Bookdepository bookmarks, I just wish they came in different sizes.

    1. Well, now you’ve got a new way to collect your favourite quotes! 😄
It really is an amazing chair! And the book depository bookmarks are so cute, and the fact that they are designed by different people around the world is amazing too. xoxo

      1. Yeah, I have actually never collected quotes…

Yep, that is great about BD. I have a few favourites but I end up not using them because I want them to keep looking pretty and new lol.

  3. I wish I could collect bookmarks! I always lose the ones I buy, however, and it always breaks my heart because they looked really pretty. I envy your ability to keep your bookmarks. 😉
I also read everywhere! If I don’t have a physical book with me, I’ll at least have my ereader, and I use it when I’m on the bus, waiting in line, or even in class! Lol, whoops!
I don’t write in my books either. Unless digital notes count, because when I’m reading on my ereader, sometimes I might add a quick note to a quote I like or highlight a passage. 🙂
Anyway, great answers! We have lots in common. ❤

    1. Oh no! That sucks. I know the feeling, when I lose a bookmark I’m pretty devastated.
Yep yep always gotta have a book at hand am I right?! Even when I don’t have my kindle PR my book, my phone has the kindle app and I have a ton of google books to choose from!
I love the fact that the kindle let’s you highlight stuff! That’s also the only kind of ‘writing on books’ that I do! 😀
      xoxo ❤

      1. I know right? 😦
Yep for sure! I’d rather have a book to keep me entertained than being in a bus, staring aimlessly into the distance… lol. And same here, my phone has a Kobo app that has all the ebooks I own, so if I ever happen to forget my Kobo, I still have access to my books.
Yep, my Kobo does the same! It’s so useful. ❤

  4. I collect bookmarks, too! I have 2 from Book Depository right now — pretty sad compared to yours haha. I also can’t stop in the middle of the chapter. At night, though, waiting for the end of the chapter is always tough cause then I convince myself to read once more chapter and then before I know it, I’m done reading the book haha. Broken spines kill me!! This is why I try to get hardcovers, they’re more durable lol. I also don’t have the heart to write in my books, post-its are life savers haha

    1. Ooh, we have some of the same habits!
Well I’m sure your collection will continue to grow! I struggle with the chapter thing at night too when I’m also particularly tired.
Yeah, hardcovers are the best, and they look amazing. xoxo

  6. Question 7 reminds me of my first day of university (I just graduated so I am in major nostalgia mode right now) – in our introduction to Literature lecture the lecturer asked everyone in the room who currently had a book in their bag to raise their hand. That moment made me so happy. I think most readers do it everywhere they can.

  8. I’ve never read out loud before! Sometimes I hum while I read (no clue why) but other than that I need complete silence, too. And I HATE it when my brain tells me to look ahead- it always seems to do that at critically dramatic points!

    1. I have a friend who hums when she reads too! Its quite funny. Isn’t it the worst? I’m always saying to my brain: slow down dude! 😁 xoxo

  9. Leg-propping up is a necessity. It takes the reading experience from a 10/10 to 11/10 (or something like that). I love food…so you should let me in on what you eat while you read LOL

Glad you had fun with this tag!

    Cheers,
    Joey via. thoughts and afterthoughts

    1. Yes! Definitely. Leg propping makes everything that much better.
Food. Food is amazing. Well I tend to eat different things when I read. I tend to read when I eat breakfast and when I eat dinner so that can range from cereal to oats to fish and chips or curry or chicken noodle soup.
But if I’m reading during the day, I keep snacks with me such as fruit and also the more unhealthy stuff like packets of chips and chocolate.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  10. I recognize myself a lot in your answers! Except maybe the bookmark one, mine is more a collection of travel tickets, haha. It breaks my heart too, to see books with broken spines, I always am the most careful with those! Great answers Josie! ❤

    1. Well I’m glad you could see yourself here! Ah, I see haha! Yeah I try my best too, to not break spines. It gets really hard when the book is stiff and not a floppy version. xoxo

  12. Great answers. I need silence as well, I even wear my phones (sans music) while reading on the train

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thank you! Ah, that’s a good idea! When I’m on the train I feel like that’s the kind of noise I can tolerate. For me I think white noise actually can help me concentrate better. xoxo

      1. for me sometimes as well, but when I am at the 8 a.m. train, full of kids going to school, and so on, I need my earbuds!

  13. Complete silence while reading – I can relate to that. That’s why I read only in my room.

    1. Yes, glad you can relate. I find it really difficult to read when I can hear mg family’s’ voices in the background. xoxo

  14. I definitely also have this fetish where I can’t stop in the middle of the chapter. AND YES, I don’t think I can ever write on my book. I remember I was buying a book and I saw this small pen mark on one of the pages and I changed the copy. lol But I did read this book where they like to mark their books, it’s called Life by Committee by Corey Ann Haydu. Have you read that one? Tabbing is the way to go for me too! Also, reading allowed especially when I love the lines so much!!!! 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Haha! Yes a fetish! Oh man, if I found a pen mark on my book I’d be saying: nope nope nope nope.
Ah, I’ve never heard of that book before! But I might check it out!
Yes! I always tend to read out lines in books that mean something to me or that I particularly like! Have you done this tag? If not, I’d like to tag you. xoxo

      Liked by 1 person

      1. It was actually the last two copies (and the undamaged was reserved)… so I felt kinda bad for the person who got the “damaged” copy BUT I just really can’t help it! lol
I haven’t been tagged! OMG, okay. Will do this soonest! ❤

  15. I can relate to some of them.I also need complete silence to read a book.I read out loud some sentences too but not the entire book LOL!.I loved reading your answers. Have a great day! 😀

Oh gosh, reading an entire book out loud? I’d like to meet someone who does that!
Thank you and you have a wonderful day too. xoxo
