Book Chat: The Heroes of Olympus Series by Rick Riordan

Hey guys, I’m back with a new book review for you, my first review of 2015! Today I’m going to be reviewing Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus Series. Let me just say, that this series was probably one of the BEST series I’ve read in my life so far. There are 5 books in the series, which are The Lost Hero, The Son of Neptune, The Mark of Athena, The House of Hades and The Blood of Olympus. I gave each book a rating of 5 stars, and when that happens… you just know it’s an amazing series. Keep on reading and I’ll tell you why!

If you’re into things like Greek mythology, epic adventures, magic and worlds with mythical things and beings within it, you’ll probably love this series. And unlike most book series, the pace does not slow down at all throughout each book. Each book has an adventure of it’s own (but of course it all circles back to that one ultimate quest), none of the books seem to act as a filler just to bide time. It is fast paced but not so much that you get so caught up in the action that you can’t connect with the characters.

Lets talk about the plot. Seriously… amazing. In the first book, we get introduced to the first 3 main characters that are involved in the series, which are Jason, Piper and Leo. It follows the start of their quest to stop the evil Earth Mother – Gaia – from waking up and destroying the earth. We gain insight on what is going to happen and what they have to do to stop her. The plot has so many twists and turns that got me holding my breath and gasping. It kept the pace going throughout each book PERFECTLY, and proof of that is that I read the Mark of Athena, House of Hades and the Blood of Olympus, each in 2 days. And trust me, that only happens when I REALLY, REALLY love the book. I couldn’t put it down. The plot wasn’t predictable either, which is awesome. I don’t like it when I can pretty much realize what is about to happen or how the journey is going to end and this series did not disappoint. I could not guess what was going to happen next! Along with all the action, there is humor weaved in throughout the series. Leo was probably the funniest, and Percy. I literally laughed out loud so many times!

Now, lets talk characters. My favourite part. Aside the fast-paced, epic plot, the character development was on point. Sometimes when you read a book, the action and the plot can take over the characters and their development or it can go the other way around. But with this series, the two things – in my opinion – worked together in harmony. The first book introduces us to the first 3 main characters: Jason, Piper and Leo and their first quest in the huge quest to defeat Gaia. Jason is the son of Zeus and can control the wind and lightning. Piper, the daughter of Aphrodite and she finds out she can charmspeak – influence people with her voice – and Leo (MY FAVOURITE CHARCTER) the son of Hephaestus, and he is a master engineer with the ability to manipulate and use fire. I deeply connected with these characters and throughout the series, we see their transformation and their growth as they become better and stronger. The second book introduces us to the next 3 main characters: the well known Percy, Hazel and Frank. Just like the first book, we experience their mini-quest which goes towards the big quest. We get to know these three characters and their personalities and then, in the last 3 books, when they all come together (Jason, Piper, Leo, Frank, Hazel, Percy, Annabeth and more) we get to see how they slowly transform in the circumstances.
There was also a great amount of romance too. LEO AND CALYPSO. Oh my gosh. It warmed my heart to read about them. I am all for team Caleo. And Nico – the Son of Hades – although he wasn’t much of a main character, but we got some focus on him throughout the last 2 books, I REALLY warmed up to him. I found that by the last book, he was one of my favourite characters.

Overall, this book probably has everything you’d ever want in a book series. An epic adventure, crazy monsters and Greek mythology, humor, love, awesome characters with awesome powers and a heart gripping plot that gets your heart pumping. I really recommend this series to anyone who is into this type of story.
